This prestigious hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos opened its doors in 2009 after a complete overhaul and face-lift. Those old enough will remember the old Ikoyi hotel when it became famous for its Suya and the black market Forex deals in the parking lot.

The Southern Sun Ikoyi Hotel doesn’t deal in such mundane endeavors; instead they offer a 4 star service easily comparable to that of any world class hotelier. Speaking of world class, the gym is fully equipped with an amazing view of the swimming pool below and possesses spacious male and female locker rooms that have adjoining Saunas and steam rooms. Really classy!

The roomy restaurant is to the left of the lobby and has beautiful lights hanging low from the ceiling beside it is the cocktail bar separated by a glass partition. Go up a flight of stairs and you come to a private lounge area with a bar. You can have meetings or catch up with the newspapers in cozy seclusion and once seated the wait staff will immediately be at your service. I ordered a frothy cappuccino and much later some Earl Grey tea. Sheer bliss! The menu is full of both traditional and Continental cuisine and also has a few gastronomic creations made by the Chef himself. Signature dishes like the awe inspiring Chicken Atete with a side of rice which I had for lunch that day.

There are 3 meeting rooms with seating for 12, 8 and 6 persons respectively; the largest has a screen and projector while the other two have flat screen TVs. The multipurpose hall seats a maximum of 100 people has a retractable partition and when divided seats 30 and 50.

The Southern Sun Ikoyi hotel has 9 floors with a total of 195 rooms in 5 categories: Standard, Executive, Junior Suite, standard Suite & Executive Suite. Each luxuriously decorated room has a flat screen TV with Satellite channels, safety deposit box, writing desk, tea/coffee making set, stocked mini bar and spectacular views of Ikoyi. Some categories have both bathtubs and showers en-suite.

The hotel’s security is quite impressive from the uniformed guards at the gate to the CCTV cameras strategically placed around the hotel. There are smoke detectors, fire exits, fire extinguishers, fire hoses and sprinklers on every floor.

Perfect for the business and casual traveler and if you want to pay even less take advantage of the Weekend Jumbo – Leisure Package that’s still running.  So are Friday’s Seafood and Jazz dinner and the Sunday Brunch.
