7 tips on packing for your next trip

Here’s some of the stuff I do when preparing for a trip:

  • Make a list – when packing always itemize ahead of schedule. Trust me you do not want to forget something important because you waited until the last minute.

  • Duration – How much you pack all depends on how long you are going away for i.e. overnight, weekend, a week or months. Worst case scenario you can always buy what you need, over packing means no room for souvenirs on your return.

  • Itinerary – if you are like me you plan every day in advance. So unless you had been invited to several formal occasions like a wedding, dinner or conference you should always pack one formal outfit and shoes to match. You can never go wrong with a pair of jeans, trainers, button down shirts and t-shirts. For those unexpectedly cold nights you can add a sweatshirt, pullover or light jacket. If you are going hiking you should have your hiking shoes, and loose comfortable attire. For the beach vacation you need a pair of flip flops and sandals.

  • Weather – What’s the weather like where you are going? If it’s mostly rainy pack a mackintosh, if it’s cold a fleece or pullover will come in handy. If its hot pack shorts and t-shirts, if it’s warm pack a swimsuit, you will thank me for it.

  • Method of packing – I don’t advise putting your tablet or notebook in your suitcase; they are fragile and might get damaged. I prefer to roll my clothes and arrange them in layers -jeans, jackets and sweaters on the bottom, undergarments in the middle, toilet bag, chargers, power packs, and little towel on top. I also maximize the space in my shoes by packing them with my socks, and jewelry. Not only is this sort of packing neat and efficiently but it also gets me through airport screening in record time.

  • Weight – If you are flying you must avail yourself of the baggage weight restrictions of the airline you are using. Usually 20-23kg in Economy class the limits differ from flight to flight and airline to airline.

  • Essentials – Always keep your essentials like your passport, credit cards, cash, tickets, medication, etc. in your carry on. Don’t unnecessarily tempt any airline personnel or helplessly wait while your baggage is lost in transit.
