One such person is Nigerian comedian Ali Baba; who had a good idea to create a platform to build upcoming comedians into marketable brands and challenge existing performers to work on new material and not just recycle the same old jokes. He named it Spontaneity because as he explained the industry was filled with too many people who were lazy and didn’t realize that the only way to maintain your freshness as a comic was to be spontaneous. Ali Baba rightly believes he and his colleagues should be able to find a joke in any topic.
So he convinced others like producer Bunmi Davies to join the team and they somehow got some cash and a car as the grand prize of the contest. HotelNowNow collaborated as hotel providers for the fourth installment. Thanks to this partnership the staff of Africa’s leading discount hotel site got complimentary tickets.
It went down on Saturday November 14th 2015 at the Muson Centre, Onikan – Lagos. People from all works of life were in attendance, including some of the top comedians and radio presenters in the business. The likes of Cris D’Razor and Olisa Adibua (Beat 99.9 FM), Yaw (Wazobia FM), comedienne Princess, Teju Babyface and wife, Omobaba No. 1, Afrobeat maestro Dede Mabiaku, the Guvnor, Funky Mallam, Laf’Up (who was the host of the show) and others.
Sponsors banners were lined up side by side on the red carpet and people used them as backdrops for several selfies. Things kicked off at around 7pm there were 11 competing rookie comedians from different backgrounds but only three would make it to the finale in January.

It was a rib cracking and tight contest even the audience got involved by writing down different topics they could choose from. During the intermission Ali Baba and Dede challenged some members of the audience and old hands to get on stage and show the contestants how it’s done. Ali Baba was the most versatile one of all he kept dishing out joke after joke (what do you expect from the originator of such a brilliant idea?).
At the end of the night the three finalists emerged selected by the judges and approved by the audience via cheering. HotelNowNow wishes Ali Baba even more success in such endeavors in the future and will gladly participate anytime.
