October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Travel man is always down for a good cause, so when I got the call from the founder and president of BRECAN (Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria) Chief (Mrs.) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu; that my services as PR consultant were needed, I swung into action.

Date: Sat. Oct 31st 2015

Time: 10.30am

Take Off Point: Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos

Route:  To the Lekki Phase 1 First gate roundabout and back

Lead Jogger: Hon. Omotayo Oduntan (Deputy Chief Whip) Lagos State House of Assembly

Surprisingly, certain media outfits weren’t willing to cover the event without some form of honorarium. Thankfully I managed to get STV, Cool TV and Daily Times to cover the event.

I was impressed by the turn-out; many people still think things like this awareness drive are a joke.  Breast Cancer is no laughing matter, respect the survivors, mourn the victims and understand the disease. Scientists the world over have struggled to find a cure without success (so far), the best they have come up with is early detection and aggressive therapy.

Chief Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu is herself a very vocal breast cancer survivor and has through her organization spread the word on regular self-examination and getting regular check-ups from medical professionals. Every October charities like BRECAN organize awareness drives to also raise funds for more cancer research. If you can’t join them on the street click here to find out how you can donate generously.

Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is a leading not-for-profit and non-governmental organization galvanizing action against breast cancer in Nigeria. Founded in 1997 by Chief (Mrs.) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, BRECAN is increasingly improving the lives of many touched by breast cancer who would have succumbed to the disease due to ignorance and lack of support.

Every year she organizes the Jog for Life and invites supporters to join her in creating more awareness by sharing the literature and giving talks after an exhilarating bout of exercise. I actually found myself struggling to keep up with her. We made it to the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout and back to the venue without any casualties and during our progress fliers were handed out to the pedestrian spectators and drivers alike. Mission Successful!

I am keeping an eye out and hope I can join BRECAN for this year’s jog as well. I need the workout and I am still down for a good cause.
